Thrush, otherwise known as oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC), is a yeast infection that develops in areas such as the mouth, throat and on the tongue. The condition is typically found in newborns and the elderly, but it can actually occur in people of any age.

A suppressed immune system is often the culprit for an outbreak of thrush. It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast called candida, which is healthy in its normal state but problematic when it overgrows. When it grows too abundantly in the body, it can develop into a fungal infection, attacking moist areas of the body with fungus.
