While I do not know specific statistics, I have learned that women are indeed more susceptible to Candida problems when pregnant. Research has shown that the 2nd trimester is the most common time for the woman to begin noticing Candida symptoms. Although it is very uncomfortable, there is no evidence that these symptoms can cause problems for the unborn baby.
As I understand it, the reason behind Candida tendencies in pregnant women is the drastic increase in hormones. It can affect the vaginal PH, leading to an environment that invites bacteria growth.
Eating a high-sugar diet only "feeds" the bacteria problem and makes the situation worse. This can be a real battle, because often pregnant women tend to crave sugary, carbs during pregnancy.
Hope this helps! |
